The Hip Clinic
practices within the National Health Service at St. George’s
as well as seeing and treating private patients. St
George’s Hospital is the major hospital for the South West
London area, a Teaching Hospital and is now a Major Trauma
Centre and part of the London Trauma Network. The Hip
Clinic team at St George’s includes Mr Simon Bridle and Mr
Philip Mitchell, senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons, a
research nurse, an Arthroplasty Fellow and other trainees.
-
We specialise in
hip and knee replacement, ranging from straightforward
primary replacement, to complex cases and revision
procedures, in particular cases where there is major bone
loss or deep infection. We have a comprehensive range of
diagnostic facilities available and specialist support from
our Microbiologists for infected cases.
-
National Health
Service patients can be seen following referral from their
General Practitioner or treating consultant. We frequently
see patients with difficult problems for second opinions,
referred to us by colleagues across the region. We provide
exactly the same services to private patients and
appointments can usually be made to see us with a week.
-
As well as seeing and
treating NHS hip and knee patients at St. George’s, primary hip and
knee replacements are done at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre in
Epsom. We both see private patients at Parkside Hospital in
Wimbledon and St. Anthony’s Hospital in Cheam. Mr Bridle also
consults at The Cromwell and Lister Hospitals in West London and Mr
Mitchell at Ashtead Hospital in Surrey. Appointments can be
arranged through our PA or by contacting the hospital directly,
along with a letter of referral.
-
We strive to deliver the
highest standard of modern orthopaedic care, from consultation
through to surgery and rehabilitation. We use implants with
established track records, with amongst the best results in the
English National Joint Registry (NJR) and in accordance with
National Institute for Clinical Excellence guidelines (NICE). Our
private practice totally reflects our NHS practice and we perform no
procedures in the private sector that we do not perform regularly in
the health service. We are committed to audit, follow-up and
clinical governance, which show that our patients can expect a very
low complication rate and a high degree of clinical satisfaction.
We are both members of Joint Replacement Specialists, a group of
eminent hip and knee surgeons, who share our philosophy. We are
heavily involved in post-graduate education. Both Mr Mitchell and Mr
Bridle speak at international hip surgery meetings and host the St
George’s Revision Hip Forum, a highly regarded meeting, which draws
a major international faculty and delegates from all over Europe.
We are committed to scientific research and development and publish
articles in the field of hip surgery.

At the hip clinic we
believe communication and team working are essential to optimise the
outcome for our patients. The secretarial support, junior staff,
nurses and physiotherapists are an integral part of our unit. This
team approach extends to Mr Mitchell and Mr Bridle operating
together when dealing with our most challenging cases. In very
complex situations two surgeons operating together minimises the
risk of problems occurring during the operation and helps us to
achieve the best results in these difficult cases. We have close
links with our surgical colleagues at St. George’s, in particular
pelvic fracture surgeons, children’s hip surgeons and with surgeons
in other disciplines such as Plastic and Vascular surgeons, whose
help is sometimes needed in complex cases. We work closely with
Microbiologists when treating infected cases – close collaboration
is vital in successfully dealing with joint infections.
